Western Railway Launches Large-Scale Demolition Drive Near Bandra Terminus Following Bombay High Court Order
Western Railway has begun a five-day demolition drive near Bandra Terminus following a Bombay High Court order, targeting around 400 encroachments in Bandra East. The operation aims to enhance railway safety, expand services, add platforms, and separate local and express routes, with alternative housing provided to 100 eligible residents amid security-backed execution.
The action has been undertaken as part of a broader infrastructure and safety enhancement plan for one of Mumbai’s key railway hubs. Authorities intend to reclaim the cleared land to facilitate critical upgrades, including improved safety systems, the introduction of 50 new long-distance train services, construction of additional platforms, and the systematic separation of local and express train operations at Bandra Terminus.
According to officials, nearly 100 eligible residents affected by the clearance drive have been provided alternative housing arrangements. The operation has been conducted under heavy security deployment to ensure law and order throughout the five-day period, and no major disruptions have been reported so far.
While the demolition drive progresses under court-mandated supervision, concerns remain among sections of the affected population regarding potential loss of livelihoods for those displaced by the removal of encroachments. Authorities maintain that the initiative is essential for long-term railway efficiency, safety, and capacity expansion in the region.
The drive marks a significant step in Western Railway’s ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure and streamline rail operations at one of Mumbai’s busiest transport corridors.
